The tour guides deserve their own blog post! They had much knowledge and kept each tour engaging and relevant to healthcare. Our first guide's name was Barry. Barry is a retired microbiologist who has worked in public health in the UK. We walked with him around Soho and learned about the influential history of public health. John Snow was a crucial character in its evolution and discovered that cholera was coming from contaminated drinking water. We also delved into the history of dealing with health disparities and how they have changed rapidly. Barry began by describing how waste was dealt with in the 1800s and how people would pour their waste into the water. This dumping caused a massive stench throughout the city, leading to it being named "the great stench." Years of research and development have established the sewage system the UK has today. It was compelling to hear Barry's perspective because he worked for the UK's public health system during COVID. Our next tour guide was Bobby. Bobby led us through the beautiful Windsor Castle and the village of Eaton. Her enthusiastic energy and hilarious stories kept the tour engaging. I did not know much about this castle before coming here, so it was interesting to learn about its history. My favorite fact she shared was that if the king or queen was staying at the castle, the royal flag would be flying. It was also delightful walking around Eaton. Our most recent guide was Liz Minter. She walked us through Dover Castle. Liz's insight was very personable because she previously had lived there. She made sure to not only cover key facts but also share personal stories about her family's lives in Dover. I loved how every tour guide not only led us through thoroughly but also added their own flair. I cannot wait to experience more tours and meet new guides!
Left is Bobby, middle is Barry, and right is Liz!
